Jose:

I see, apparently mpbio.com named it wrong (or gives the wrong CAS number for the compound you want!), and even emolecules.com includes both synonyms, alpha and delta, for that CAS number:
http://www.emolecules.com/cgi-bin/more?vid=535408
So how about any of the sources at
http://www.emolecules.com/cgi-bin/search?q=21887-64-9
such as
http://www.oakwoodchemical.com/search/Oaklookup.asp?mNumber=M03343
or new Google hits
http://ebiochemia.com/biochemia16_pdf/amino_acid_pdf/Ornithine.pdf
http://pllabs.com/p_chem.php?cat=23&header=Amino+acid+Boc+derivatives
http://www.orpegen.com/share/Catalog_Boc2006.pdf

Almost, but no such luck... Unfortunately, Sigma only sells the Boc-L-Ornithine with the Boc on side chain amine. I am looking for CAS # 21887-64-9.

I will take a look at the list you provided, but so far my google-fu only found Synthetec <http://store.synthetech.com/customer/search.php?substring=boc-l-ornithine> provinding this ornithine derivative, in bulk (minimum purchase 50g, when I am looking for a couple of grams for right now).

Thank you,

Jose

        Jose:

A variant of your phrase "NŠ-Boc-L-ornithine" input into a Google search for
        Nalpha "Boc-L-ornithine"
gave 24 hits including the attractive one
        http://www.mpbio.com/index.php?cPath=492_501&page=62
        which contained a link to
        http://www.mpbio.com/product_info.php?cPath=492_501&products_id=152037&osCsid=tmv12pvo19tbrfjh5rluojm7e1
Is that the right compound? That page gives its CAS Registry number, and then a Google search on that
        "13650-49-2"
gives 26 more hits for your specific compound, including a list of vendors at
        http://www.emolecules.com/cgi-bin/search?q=13650-49-2
        which includes
        http://www.sigmaaldrich.com/catalog/ProductDetail.do?N4=B8126|SIGMA&N5=Product%20No.|BRAND_KEY&F=SPEC <http://www.sigmaaldrich.com/catalog/ProductDetail.do?N4=B8126%7CSIGMA&N5=Product%20No.%7CBRAND_KEY&F=SPEC>
which has it available in 1-5 grams.

Subject: ORGLIST: removal of protective group in NŠ-Boc-Nš-Fmoc-L-ornithine

        Hi,

I am a biochemist with very little synthetic chemistry experience, so I apologize in advance for my possibly-ridiculously-obvious questions.

I am derivatizing ornithine (non-proteogenic AA), and need NŠ-Boc-L-ornithine as a starting compound, which so far I've found not to be available commercially except in bulk (if you know otherwise, please tell me where I could purchase gram quantities!!).

Can I purchase NŠ-Boc-Nš-Fmoc-L-ornithine and remove the Fmoc protective group (with 20% piperidine in DMF) without removing the Boc protective group (or vice-versa for that matter)?

        Thank you,

        Jose
