NEt3.HCl is soluble in water. Can't you just wash the reaction mixture (is
immiscible with water) with water?

The stability of organic azides is governed by the size of the R group in
R-N3. Most azides are not water-reactive but they can decompose with strong
acids especially lewis acids.
