hello everybody,
I want a procedure for alpha halogenation(preferably chlorination) of activated aromatic ketones like p-methoxy acetophenone, p-nitro acetophenone, p-bromo acetophenone etc. i had referred one procedure (bulletin of korean chemical society,2003, vol 24, 407) using acetonitrile as a solvent, para toluene sulphonic acid and NCS as the chlorinating agent. but the reaction doesn't go to completion and there is no means of differentiation between the starting material and the reaction mixture by TLC or m.p determination. NMR offcourse shows a mixture of stating material, mono chlorinated product and dichlorinated product, further the reaction fails with p-methoxy acetophenone.
please suggest me some alternative practicable method for this . thank you
