Hi all

Procedure for synthesis of b-D-penta-O-acetate of glucose
Stir a suspension of anhydrous sodium acetate (50g, 609mmol) and acetic anhydride (700ml) in a RBF and gently heat to boiling. Add about 3g of D-glucose (50g in total, 454 mmol) and continue to gently heat. The reaction will begin to reflux gently under its own heat (this may require addition of further small portions of sugar) and at this point the flask should be removed from the heat source and reflux maintained by repeated additions of small sugar portions with occasional agitation to prevent excessive build-up of unreacted sugar on tha bottom of flask. After all the sugar has been added and the resulting solution is no longer exothermic then it should be heated at full boil for 30min. after cooling. Pour the solution onto the ice and stand for 2hr with occasional scratching and stirring to encourage crystallistion and to prevent the formation of block of solid. Collect the solid formed by filtration and wash with cold water. Purify by recrystalization from hot
 ethanol. Melting point 132-133ºC.
