I have had the same problem. When utilizing TEA some developing systems did
not work anymore. I overcome this problem by adding some drops of ammonia
solution to the eluent. Eventually when I solved this problem this way, I
ran the chromatography utilizing 1-2% of ammonia. Even if the aqueous
solution of ammonia does not dissolve in the eluent, if you agitate
vigourously the ammonia present will make the same as TEA.
The big advantage is that the problems with developing TLC plates
with staining dips disappeared.
Try it for yourself.
My compounds were sensitive to acidic SiO2 and eluted as stripes. I avoided
this with ammonia-eluents. Obviously you should lower your eluent polarity.
