Ken,
its very easy to monitor your reaction by TLC. You just have to dip your TLC plate in a KMnO4 solution:

aqueous sol. KMnO4 (100 mL):

KMnO4 (1 g) + K2CO3 (6.7 g) + NaOH 5% (1.7 mL)
you will see a yellow spot from methyl acrylate.
