DEAR ORGLIST MEMBERS ,
I am trying to make 4 heptanone abt 1 kg from butyric acid using the
process given in organic syntheses coll volume 5 , page 589 . process is
essentially thermal decarboxylation of iron salt of butyric acid ( ref
journal of organic chemistry 1962 page 854-56 volume 27) and uses hydrogen
reduced iron and reports good yields. we have used electrolytic iron .
I am not getting the product on distillation as distillate is water
soluble indicating it is butyric acid . can anybody help me understand
the process ? this process looks most simple method of making aliphatic
ketones from acids in liquid phase .
