Hello alex/everybody, thankyou for your input regarding the bromination. I am not sure where the Fe might come from but maybe another lewis acid is invovled. I will have to look into it. I would also like to add that recently, i tried the reaction using the following conditions:
2-piperazine-6-methyl pyridine-4- carboxylic acid/CCl4/1.1eqNBS/0.1eq AIBN, reflux and i would end up only with the ring bromination and no side chain bromination within 45 mins. However, when i brominate 2-Cl-6-methyl pyridine-4- carboxylic acid (same conditions as above), i am getting around 50% sidechain bromination and approx 45% unreacted material and approx.5% ring and side chain bromination. So i am trying to follow this path.
                                   philip.
