I'm not sure if this will help much but i used phenyltrimethylammonium tribromide as a brominating agent for alpha keto bromination. it was done in THF overnight at 0-4 degrees celsius.
try to see if it was also used with acids....it is considered a mild brominating agent so hopefully it won't cause multi-bromination

  Subject: ORGLIST: alpha-Bromination

  Hello !

I'm trying alpha-bromination of 4-Phenylbutyric acid to make 2-Bromo-4-Phenylbutyric acid. I tried HVZ method suggested as in Organic Syntheses using Br & PBr3 without any solvent. But after the reaction completion, I'm getting significant amount of by-product (sorry I can not identify it !) besides the product.

Can I get some advices for better performing this reaction ?

Is it necessary here to use any solvent for this reaction due to the phenyl ring ?

Is there any other superier process available for such carboxylic acid alpha-bromination ?

  Awaiting your suggetions !

  Thanks in advance,

  Nalini Patel
