About the solvent, you can try benzene.
Hydrolyze your by-product and have a look what you get.
Good luck!

>I'm trying alpha-bromination of 4-Phenylbutyric acid to make
2-Bromo-4-Phenylbutyric acid. I tried HVZ method suggested as in Organic Syntheses
using Br & PBr3 without any solvent. But after the reaction completion, I'm
getting significant amount of by-product (sorry I can not identify it !) besides
the product.
