Hello,
Here is the method from the book "Thin-layer chromatography" (Ed. By E.
Stahl)for chlorinated hydrocarbons:
Spray reagent: 0,1 g AgNO3 is dissolved in 1 ml of water and 10 ml
phenyl cellosolve (2-phenoxyethanol) added. This solution is made up to
200 ml with acetone and 1 drop 30% H2O2 added.
Treatment after spraying: The layer is irradiated with infiltered UV
light. Alumina layers must be exposed ~50 min and silica gel layers up
to 15 min if long-wave UV light is used. Dark spots are formed.

Best regards,
Ilya

Subject: ORGLIST: TLC visualization of alkyl halides

Can someone recommend a TLC visualization reagent for simple alkyl
halides (like dibromoethane)? I tried conc. sulfuric acid but it doesn't
work very well and it can be quite messy. PMA doesn't work at all.
Thanks.
