Ken,
I'm a PhD student and i have to say that i've heard these comments as well.
i've heard them spoken of terahedron lett. and a few others. the professor
you mentioned must have studied with one i know who claimed that "the
japanese always lie on their articles..."
Just to give an example i've seen in j. med. chem. an article where the
researchers said that they did a reaction in DMSO and at one point cooled
the reaction to zero added a material and let it stir at room temperature. i
don't know a lot of chemistry but going to solid phase during a chemical
reaction is new to me...
To all who claim that you can just "Email the writer" i have to say that i
have so far enountered perhaphs 2-3 useful researchers that way. the rest
either didn't help at all or told me that i didn't get the material i wanted
because "i don't know chemistry"
Articles come in all shapes and sizes and the best advice i could give is to
just give it a shot if you have the materials and they're not too expensive.
if it doesn't work once or twice try to find out exactly what the mechanism
of the reaction is and maybe that would give you an idea towards what is
going wrong.
Ohad
