Hi Bill,
A mild quenching method for NaOCl would be dilute Iodine solution (this
reaction can be monitored colorimetrically, i.e add enough iodine till a
very faint orange color persists. I'm assuming that you are using the
reagent in water, Iodine is not very soluble in water, but you can
effectively dissolve Iodine by dissolving it an aqueous solution of
Potassium iodide(several formulas/receipes are available to make it).
The other reagents are ascorbic acid, KMnO4, thiourea or ferrous salts. I
think iodine is the quick and easy to monitor.
best regards
ravi

Hello Everyone,
We are trying to synthesize a mixed anhydride in which one of
the sides is lauric acid and the other a short chain acid. I am trying
to locate a very viable synthetic procedure possibly using DCC or
another coupling agent. Can anyone help me locate the specific
literature sources? I would greatly appreciate it since the only two
articles I could find are in Japanese and we are trying to get them
translated.

Please reply directly to me at wloffredo$##$po-box.esu.edu

hi guys

Thanks for the suggestions on how to quench H2O2.

Now for another quenching question. What is the best (and safest) way to
quench NaOCl?

I've seen urea used in a patent, but I'm concerned about NCl3 being
produced. My solution to quench is about 1mL of 5% NaOCl, so this isnt an
industrial problem. I just prefer to keep explosions out of the lab.

Any suggestions welcome.

Cheers for any help

Will
