I have tried this reaction and another one from a follow up article using
raney-Ni and formic acid on a nitrated vanillic derivative and got absolutly
nothing on both reactions.
either it needs reflux and not RT or it is a total sham.
i'd try Pd/C under 30-60psi of hydrogen or if that is not possible than raney-Ni
with hydrazine hydrate under reflux conditions (which won't reduce the aldehyde
- it doesn't reduce an acid) but be careful that you don't stop the reaction
before the hydroxylamine is transformed into the final amine product
