Dear List Members:
I would like to ask if anyone knows a laboratory procedure for generating ethylene oxide from ethanolamine. I am aware that ethanolamine is made from ethylene oxide. However, sometimes it is useful to generate ethylene oxide in situ, in cases where one doesn't have a cylinder of ethylene oxide available in the lab. I have tried a SciFinder search and surprisingly, it didn't find any procedures for achieving this transformation. I have seen examples of epoxide synthesis from beta-amino alcohols in heterocyclic chemistry books, however no literature references are provided in those books. I am thinking in terms of a reaction of ethanolamine with nitrous acid. Thank you very much for your attention to my message.
Sincerely,
