Serotonin detection and delivery in biofluids:- A laser spectroscopy and imaging study.
Applications are invited for a studentship that is available from October 2005. Stipend and home student fees are provided.
The student will join a three year programme to develop methods to use advanced laser techniques to investigate the photochemistry and spectroscopy of serotonin. The overall goal of the project is develop time resolved fluorescence, single photon counting and multiphoton excitation techniques for imaging of specific entities within biological media, including cerebrospinal fluid, and to quantify the concentrations of serotonin within them. The background to this work is the growing evidence that there is a strong link between concentrations of the natural neurotransmitter serotonin within the brain and clinical depression and suicidal tendency.
The successful applicant will join a multidisciplinary team that covers the biology, laser spectroscopy and optical detection and medical aspects of the work, and will be expected to undertake visits to the Lasers for Science Facility, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory to work in collaboration with a team led by Professor A W Parker. Applicants should have, or expect to obtain a first/upper second class degree in biochemistry. Graduates in chemistry or related discipline with a strong interest in the life-sciences will also be considered. The award is jointly funded by University of Salford and CCLRC.
