I think you may try to get the 2-cyanobenzodibromide by dibromination and further treat the bromide in aq DMO (stirr at 45 o C for one hr) to get the corr aldehyde. This will not affect the cyano functionality. Dibrmide to aldehyde would be reported by 'treatment with aq silver nitrate' but the simple aq DMSO treatment works well to give 100% yield.
