Thanks for the many mails I have received about this question.
Dowtherm A is a heat transfer liquid medium commercialized by Dow Chemical
and other suppliers (Solutia, as Therminol-VP1 or BECKMANN CHEMIKALIEN KG).
This liquid, used as high boiling inert solvent, is an eutectic mixture
composed by 26.5% of biphenyl and 73.5% of diphenyl ether, m.p.12 C, b.p.
258 C, stable up to 385 degrees (more information can be obtained directly
from the address http://www.dow.com/heattrans/family/dowa/index.htm).
Some members of my company have performed reactions in high boiling point
inert solvents like decaline, diethyl ether and others. For a reaction made
at 150 C, can Dowtherm A be replaced by other solvents?
