The rule A-23.5 is no longer approved by IUPAC. Fused ring nomenclature
was completely revised and extended with the 1998 recommendations. In
addition all rules from the 1979 edition which you quote should be checked
against the 1993 Guide to IUPAC Nomenclature of Organic Chemistry where
many are modified and open ended list of trivial names are now restricted
to specified compounds. Later this year the provisional version of the
next edition should be available. For the first time it will provide a
preferred IUPAC name for ech structure not just a number of alternative
names.
