Dear Friends:
Though cis/trans notation is typically in vogue for indicating the isomers of 1,2-dimethylcyclohexne, the halogen addition products of 1,2-dimethylcyclohexene are typically indicated with E/Z nomenclature. (to show the addition of halogen molecules has taken place upon the different sides or same side).
Also, some text books use the notation trans(e,e)-1,2-dimethylcyclhexane, (e, e = being equitorial, equitorial) to indicate the more stable trans form (axial, axial is less stable by about 3.4 kcal per mol).
It seems only natural to extrapolate E/Z nomenclature for the Hydrogen addition product of 1,2-dimethylcyclohexane, though I cannot find any literature support for doing so!
Perhaps, cis and trans notation is just fine!
Krishna
