Hello All,

In my humble opinion go for the Ph.D and don't start worrying about the
money right away. I work within small group of chemists in an Industrial
R&D lab under a highly respected and highly skilled senior Ph.D. I work
with a young gentleman who, five years ago, graduated with a BS and with
another young gentleman who just graduated with a Ph.D. Presently these
two gentleman work at the same level since they have little experience
outside of an academic environment. I anticipate the young Ph.D will move
on, after gaining experience, if he wants to advance in his career. The
other gentleman is being urged to pursue an advanced degree. Don't focus
on the short term. Focus on the long term. Gain experience and build a
resume of accomplishments ( i.e. patents, published papers etc.). I have
18 years laboratory experience where 10 of those years in R&D at a Ph.D.
level however I don't have the degree and, at my age, I don't think I want
to put up with going back to the academic grind. I am happy, I love
science, especially chemistry, and if I wanted to make a lot of money I
would have avoided this field. I hope this perspective is helpful.

Regards,

E. Arruda, Scientist
IFF R&D. Union Beach, NJ.
