Would someone on this list be so kind as to answer a couple very
rudimentary questions about aspirin synthesis from salicylic acid and
acetic anhydride.

1. When the resulting aspirin decomposes with water, are the products
acetylsalicylic acid and acetic acid? If not, what are they?

2. If one were to perform the synthesis of aspirin reaction in a 90
degree C bath, rather than a 50 degree bath, would the acetylsalicylic
acid decompose to acetylsalicylic acid and acetic acid? If not, what
would happen?

3. If aspirin crystals are not dried before taking a melting point,
would, again, the reaction be the same as the decomposition with water?
If not, what would happen?

Thanks for any help.

Teresa
