Dear List Members:
I would like to pose a question that would be interesting to know. Ammonia, in the form of liquid ammonia and in aqueous solution as ammonium hydroxide, has been used to aminate aromatic compounds with suitable leaving and activating groups. Liquid ammonia having a higher ammonia concentration usually gives much higher yields of the desired products, however, handling of liquid ammonia may be inconvenient as ammonia cylinders are not available in many laboratories. I am wondering, if it is possible to use an ammonia complex, which upon heating, perhaps in a high pressure reaction, liberates ammonia which then goes on to aminate an activated aromatic halide. This procedure, if possible, would obviate the need for the use of liquid ammonia, and may simplify such reaction. Does anyone know if this has been done? I appreciate your attention to this message and look forward to hear from you.
Sincerely,
Antonio Regla
