Methylation on nitrogen with R-X type alkylating agents is often a pain
because of lack of selectivity for tertiary amine vs ammonium salt
formation. The best method for secondary amine to methyl tertiary
amine is the Eschweiler-Clarke recipe of formaldehyde and formic acid
(acts as reducing agent!).
