My group is having problems with a seemingly simple reaction:
The condensation of bromal with phenol to give Br3CCH(C6H4OH)2. The synthesis
of this coumpound is described in the patent literature, however we have not
been able to reproduce the preparation. Instead of a "colourless solid" we
have consistently obtained a dark purple resinous gum, which proved to be a
horrible mess acording to HNMR. We have tried varying solvents, time,
temperature and acid catalyst but with no sucess.
Has anyone here got any advice or "magic tricks" to get this reaction to work
propperly or any other suggestions on how to get to this compound?
Many thanks to the online organic chemistry community!
