Dear colleagues,

We have a simple set of rules at our Laboratory regarding the drying and
storage of THF.

1) When the THF bottles are received from a vendor, a label is attached to
the container on which one writes the date on which it was opened (and thus
exposed to air oxygen);

2) During our monthly safety check-ups of our laboratories, we check those
dates. We then discard peroxide formers 6 months after they have been
opened for the first time - without hesitation.

In other words, we accept the principle that exposure of peroxide formers to
air oxygen in the bottle beyond 6 months of storage can result in buildup of
sufficient concentrations of peroxide that could create an explosion hazard.

In any case, if you find a very old bottle that visibly shows solid
peroxides in the liquid phase, you should never touch these bottles, as the
heat of your hands can set off an explosion! Instead, call in professional
help such as a 'bomb squad' to have it removed from the laboratory. No
kidding...

Hope this helps.
