Dear ORGLIST members,

after more than five years operating basically with the same
configuration, it's time for some changes in ORGLIST. I'm happy to
announce the news and I hope you will like them.

During the past five years many things changed and the list grew
considerably. We are now around 1,000 members and it is becoming more
and more difficult to guarantee a proper maintenance and smooth
operation of ORGLIST using the current academic servers.

So, a domain name was registered for ORGLIST - orglist.net - and
everything is migrating to a web hosting service provider. The web and
mail services will be running at pair.com servers in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, US. I've used this service provider for several years and
it always proved to be a reliable, inexpensive service with efficient
support staff and good network infrastructure.

Members of ORGLIST will not notice many changes apart from the new url's
and email addresses for posting, subscribing and unsubscribing.

Here's how the transition will be done.

1. Starting today, the ORGLIST web site is at http://www.orglist.net and
a forwarding note is displayed at the old site. Some modifications were
done but the functionality remains the same.

2. Up to 20 May the list will be operating without changes, using the
old email servers, and the old email addresses for posting, subscribing
and unsubscribing. Instructions on how to perform such operations are at
the main web page as well as at the bottom of this message, as usual.

3. On 20 May the list with the emails of the members will be moved to
the new servers. Email distribution, subscriptions and unsubscriptions
will start to be processed by the new servers. The members that do not
want to have their email addresses moved with the list should
unsubscribe from ORGLIST before 19 May. On the same day, the web site
will take a new layout to reflect new possibilities to interact with the
list via web.

4. On 20 May, a welcome message will be sent to every member with the
instructions concerning the new service. The new email address for
posting messages to the list will be everybody$##$orglist.net (NOT BEFORE
20 MAY).

Detailed information concerning the new service is available from the
web site at http://www.orglist.net

By now you should be wondering who will pay for the service... Well, it
costed US$ 225 (1 year of web hosting and mailing list service and 2
years of domain name) and I paid it myself. But it would be nice if some
of the members could share the costs. I think for such a small amount
there is no sense in finding a sponsor. Those willing to contribute
please contact me. They will be publicly acknowledged and will win an
email account under the domain orglist.net for one year!

I hope we can do the transition smoothly and I'm sure it will improve
the operation of the list.
