Hello!

Patents are usually granted to confer monopolistic rights to the patent
owner (not the inventor), for a limited time, on the economic exploitation
of a certain pieces of knowledge or technological systems in industry,
agriculture and other sectors relevant to the economy. Using the
information of a patent for scientific research is a gray area, but I don't
know of any claims of infringement made against bona-fide research workers.
Although detailed limitations vary from country to country, certain
procedures usually are nonpatentable: games, algorithms, therapeutic
procedures, surgical procedures, etc. However, certain related products are
patentable, for example, a contraption to play that game, the computer to
effect the calculation, a drug used in the therapy, a scalpel of special
design, etc. Furthermore, in certain cases, copyright laws may offer
similar protection, as might be the case of certain algorithms, such as
computer application programs.

If in real need, consult a patents attorney!

All the best,

Jacob
