You can apply Curtius (Schmidt, Hoffman, Lossen...) reaction providing an
amine from carboxylic acid. An amine is converted into alcohol by anorganic
or organic nitrite in the presence of aq. sulphuric acid.

Subject: ORGLIST: reductive degradation
You might consider oxidative degradation , for instance the Hunsdiecker
reaction or the modern variant of it, described by Cristol and Firth, who
employ a Lead Oxide suspension, the carboxylic acid, bromine and irradiation
with a simple tungsten lamp, to produce the decarboxylated bromide.
