can anyone give me some advice about two problems i have shown below?

1. formylation of the C2 of imidazole derivative
i'm trying to formaylate a imidazole derivative that has two tert-butyl
ester group on C4 and C5 and another acetic acid group on N1. normal method
such as the deprotonation using t-butyl lithium or LDA followed by quenching
with DMF or methyl formate didn't work.

2. hydroxylmethylation of C2 of imidazole derivative
i found some references about the hydroxymethylation of C2 of imidazole
derivative. they used acqueous formaldehye or paraformyaldehyde to do this
job. but those methods didn't work for 1-benzyl-4,5-dicyano imidaozle. why?

i do appreciate your help with those problem above.

thanks.
