Dear All,
Could I draw the following positions to the attention of any interested parties.

Applications are invited for three PhD studentships within the School of
Chemistry. Notional start date; October 1st 1998.

Studentship 1. "Chiral Phosphorus Analogues of Singlet Carbenes"

Studentships 2 and 3. "Coal Combustion Residues as Catalyst Supports"

The first of these positions (EPSRC Earmarked) is a synthetic project
involving the design of a new class of organophosphorus molecule; the chiral
phosphenium salt. We have recently prepared (Chem. Commun., 1997, 1317) the
first members of this class of species, analogues of singlet carbenes, and
this project seeks to establish their applications in asymmetric synthesis
and analysis for the first time. The project will involve collaborations
with two teams of organometallic chemists, in Leeds (Dr P. C. McGowan) and
Orsay, France (Dr O. Riant).

The second and third positions are part of an EC project in collaboration
with companies in the UK, Portugal, Italy and Germany, funded through the
European Coal and Steel Community. Coordinated at Leeds University (Dr R.
Greatex and Dr T. P. Kee), these studentships will examine the use of adding
value to coal and gasification residues from coal-fired power stations
through their use as catalyst supports. In addition to the member companies
significant collaboration is envisaged with other academic teams at Leeds
University (materials), Huddersfield (surface science) and the Open
University (solid state NMR).

Parties interested in any of the above positions, and holding or likely to
meet the eligibility requirements (first or upper second class degree or
MSc) should contact Dr T. P. Kee in the first instance; Tel: 0113 2336421;
Fax: 0113 2336565; E-mail: T.P.Kee$##$
