Dear colleagues,
a few days ago I posted to OrgList and OrgChem a message asking about
titanium chloride. It's my wish to thank Ian Newington, Eric Lucas and
Tony Herlt for their kind and useful answers.
The original question was:

Dear colleagues, some times ago I read an article by Christopher J.
Moody et al. (J. Chem. Soc. Perkin Trans I '90, 673-679) in which it
was described the reduction of an aromatic nitro group by using a
Titanium (III) Chloride 15% solution-ammonium acetate buffer-acetone
system. Does anybody know if there is a review regarding the use of
titanium trichloride?

Here you are the answers I got:

There is a general review of low-valent titanium
chemistry by John E. McMurry in Acc. Chem Res., 1974, 7(9), 281-6.
Professor McMurry has done a lot of work in this area.

Gianluca,

I know of reviews of lower-valent (presumably Ti(0)) reagents like
McMurry's, but I'm unfamiliar with reviews of the reducing powers of
TiCl3.

Could you make sure to post anything you find out? I'm interested.

        Thanks,
                Eric Lucas

The Encyclopaedia of Reagents for Organic Synthesis, ed L.A. Paquette,
1995, vol 7, pp 4911-4913 gives a brief review of the uses of TiCl3.
