Hmm, we do a 'blue bottle' experiment in which either conc.HCl or sat.NaCl
is electrolysed in a thick walled deep blue sperical glass bottle (c.6-8"
diam.) with inert electrodes and the mixed gases released (hydrogen and
chlorine) are released through a tube and collected over water (i think we
use a dashpot in line for safety).
The neat stoichiometric mixture can then be ignited by spark or u.v.
The blue bottle filters out the uv preventing possible ignition at source.
Strongly recommend safety screen and goggles.
Of interest are there any UK chemistry teachers out there who do this one?
Of further interest, are there any UK chemistry teachers out there?!
